I believe we should be equally funding outward bound exploration and settlement activities for discovery, and an inward focus toward applying space-based know-how and resources back on the home planet for its ultimate salvation.

I'm sure that NASA must be concerned about how to protect its old complexes on Cape Canaveral and Galveston Bay. Has sea level rise or uncontrolled wildfire factored into the discussion of possible future spaceport or space elevator locations on Ear…

I've heard that the physics of very small particles is quite different. Cannot a living ant can fall great distances without injury? I wonder, how does gravity vs. "zero" G affect the assembly of very small structures? I've wondered for a while now…

Oil is more and more valuable, it will certainly be worthwhile to recover substantial amounts as raw materials for closed-loop chemical processes. But not to be burned in the open atmosphere! Enough readily accessible oil and gas exist to place our…

My Dream

I dream that all required heat, electric, magnetic and motive power be captured from solar radiation directly, above the atmosphere, where it is roughly three times more powerful than it is down here on the surface of Earth. This part of the dream, known as Space Solar Power System (SSPS) to NASA, dates back at least to the original "oil crisis" of 1973. My dream differs by concentrating sunlight's full strength via sun-orbiting constellations of heavy mirrors quite a bit nearer the Sun than our Earth orbit, cohering sunlight and beaming it toward Earth orbit (and other-ward).

To avoid overheating the Earth, with its unfortunate enhanced greenhouse atmosphere, the total power imported must be met by an equivalent space-shading of solar radiation. By combining unlimited solar power with solar shading capabilities, humankind may be able (gingerly and slightly) to modify climate conditions as needed for adjustment to unavoidable future global warming, while entirely stopping the further enhancement of atmospheric greenhouse gasses.

Hi Paul!

I'm with you on SSP and most things Bucky (namely his concept of "real wealth") and am very glad that you have started this group within IASE. Having been involved with IASE on and off since 2003, I have always promoted the idea of saving the home planet as a global project, utilizing the entrepreneurial spirit and not discouraging it.

In 2003-04 I ran a short-lived volunteer effort in the DC area called the Homeplanet Defense Institute, which ran two public seminars. This led to me writing a book called Homeplanet Defense: Strategic Thought for a World in Crisis (Infinity Publishing, 2005).

Since then I've learned more on SSP, primarily through Gene Meyers at www.spaceislandgroup.com. Gene is a great guy and if he is not with IASE he should be. I've told him about it and will let him know about your initiative here. Again, I'm with you 110 percent on getting SSP higher on the U.S. and global agenda!

Peace,
Martin

Thanks for your comment. Yes, exploitation and eventual conservation and rehabilitation are of paramount importance going in to this endeavor. As well as leasing and ownership arrangements.

Welcome, Paul. I'm pleased you've joined, and with a pretty clear notion of why you're interested in Space exploration. I think you'll find a lot to help here. JCR
